FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I find out how my student is doing in classes?
We encourage you to sign up for your infinite campus account to check your child’s progress and grades online. Access the Infinite Campus Portal here.
You may contact any teacher directly by e-mail or phone. See our “Faculty” section of this website for e-mail information. Faculty emails are generally the first letter of the teacher’s first name and the teacher’s complete last name followed by @washoeschools.net. You may call the direct line to the school at (775) 321-3160. If you are not certain which teachers your child has, please contact the counseling office.
Every Wooster student has a planner in which to record homework assignments. Ask your child’s teachers to initial the planner to be certain the assignment is recorded correctly and then check your child’s planner each evening.
Who can help me with attendance questions?
This school year, WCSD is implementing a new online tool in Infinite Campus for parents to use when notifying schools of absences. Please make use of this tool as it will help us more efficiently process absence notifications. More information can be found here: https://www.washoeschools.net/Page/18226
Please call the day your child is absent in order to excuse over the phone. You must make contact with our office within three days of the absence!
If you need to discuss attendance with an administrator, contact our main office at (775)321-3160. If you think attendance issues are related to motivational concerns, family issues, or social/emotional issues, please feel free to contact your child’s counselor.
My son/daughter does not get along with a teacher. What options are there?
Learning to accept differences is a skill we aim to develop in students and staff. Wooster does not change classes based on personal relationships. To resolve differences and misunderstandings, we recommend that students talk directly with their teacher or request that a counselor or administrator facilitate a student-teacher discussion. If there are concerns that you, as a parent, want to address directly, please contact the teacher to express your concerns. If no resolution is achieved, feel free to set up a parent/student/teacher conference — contact your child’s counselor for assistance.
How can my student make up credits if they are behind?
There are optional ways to make up credits including summer school, night school courses, correspondence, and online courses. All of these options have a charge attached. Please contact your child’s counselor for specific information or visit the “Alternate Credit” portion of this website for alternative credit info.
If my child is not doing well in a course, what should I do?
Find out what the problem is by talking directly with the teacher and with your child. Let your child know that you see value in the course and remind him/her that the credit is necessary for graduation. Ask how you can support him/her in doing better.
Wooster offers free after school tutoring help! Check with your student’s counselor for more information.
How do I set up a parent-teacher conference?
The easiest way to set up a parent-teacher conference is to contact the teacher directly by phone or email.
My son/daughter does not feel safe at school. I want to help. What can I do?
Wooster High School’s goal is to create a safe and secure learning environment for all our students. Please call the Student Services Office (SSO) if your child is experiencing a situation that makes him/her feel unsafe at school or while traveling to or from school.
How can I find out about applying for college and/or scholarships?
The Wooster Career Center is a great place to start! You may also want to check out internet websites such as www.fastweb.com or www.finaid.org. Federal financial aide may be available at www.fafsa.gov. Most colleges have their own website if you enter the name of the college or university in a search engine like www.google.com or www.yahoo.com.
What are the requirements for graduation?
Specific high school graduation requirements can be found on the Washoe County School District website.
What is Wooster’s daily schedule?
We have a traditional schedule of periods 1-7 (in order) on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. On Wednesday and Thursday we have a modified block schedule, with periods 1, 2, 3 and Advisory on Wednesdays, and periods 4, 5, 6, 7 on Thursdays. School starts at 8:00am and ends at 2:45pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays; we start at 8:00am and end at 2:00pm on Wednesdays. Some students have a zero period or 8th period class. Refer to the schedule in the student handbook or on the website for specific times and days that zero and 8th period classes meet. You can view our bell schedule in the above tab labeled Bell Schedule.
Is grading the same in high school as it is in middle school?
Yes and no. Students earn grades of A, B, C, D and F (no minuses or pluses are allowed) as they did in middle school. The big difference is that it’s semester grades that “count” in high school. Academic Warnings will be sent approximately half-way through each quarter giving parents a “heads up” if the student is not doing well in class. Students receive progress grades at the end of the first quarter and the end of the third quarter, but it’s the semester grades that students earn in January and June that appear on their official transcripts and that count for graduation. Complete information on grading practices, credits needed for graduation, and diploma types may be found on the Wooster Course Guide.
How will my student know what the school rules are?
Every student will receive a Wooster Student Handbook the first week of school. It has all of the school rules and policies, and it is also a planner that students should use to keep track of assignments and other activities. Students should have their planners with them at school every day, since students use them (with the signed permission of the teacher) as their pass to be out of class. View the Wooster Student Handbook.
What are the attendance rules?
Washoe County School District has a detailed attendance policy. It is very important that students attend school every day. If your student must be absent, it is essential that you send a note or call the school at (775) 321-3160 to inform us about your child's absence. Students must ask their teachers for makeup work when they are absent. Students who have 8 or more unexcused absences will receive a failing grade in the class, unless the work has been completed and an attendance appeal is approved.
What do I do if my student is late to school?
It is important that students are on time for every class every day. If your student is late to class, he or she should report immediately to Student Services Office (SSO) to get a tardy pass. Your student must have their student ID card with them. If he/she arrives late, he/she should report to the office with an excuse signed by the parent. If students are late to class, the teacher will assign consequences, and the Student Services Office (SSO) may assign additional consequences.
What will happen if my student does not behave in class?
Students need to behave in ways that do not interfere with their learning or the learning of other students. Every teacher has a progressive discipline plan that he/she will communicate to parents. Teachers may assign consequences such as lunch detention and should contact parents if student behavior in class is a concern. If the student’s behavior does not improve, the teacher may refer the student to the SSO for additional consequences such as lunch detention, in-house suspension or Saturday School. Parents will be notified if students are assigned consequences other than lunch detention. Wooster strives for a safe campus, and fighting, taping of fights, harassment, and bullying are never acceptable. Administrators assign consequences for such behaviors in accordance with the WCSD Behavior Matrix and applicable policies and procedures. Parents will be contacted if their student is involved in serious behaviors such as these.
How can my student get involved at Wooster?
Wooster has many ways for students to become involved. There are a variety of sports teams students may try out for, and there are many clubs and co-curricular activities such as band, jazz band, orchestra, choir, theater, ROTC, Leadership, Journalism, and Yearbook, to name just a few. Information is available on Wooster’s website, from counselors, or from administrators or teachers. Students are happier, healthier, and more successful when they are connected to the school outside of their daily classes. Students can attend athletic events for free if they have purchased their student activity card, and we also have dances, carnivals, and other events on campus. Please encourage your student to get involved in one or more activities that interest him or her!
How can parents get involved with the school?
We love our parents at Wooster! Parents are invited to attend school events such as plays, athletic events, and Open House. Join our Parent Boosters! We need you! Parents help out at games, plays, fundraisers, and in many other ways. Contact an administrator or the main office for information on how to get involved with the school. Visit the Parent Booster website to join: www.woosterboosters.org
How does the school communicate with parents?
We utilize phone, email, and US mail in order to reach out to parents/guardians. When families have changes in personal information such as address, phone numbers, or emergency contact information, it is essential that you let us know. You may contact the main office at 321-3160 or fill out a short form to tell us about the changes. It is very important that we have current information on file so that we can contact you regarding your student as needed.
What if my student becomes ill during the school day?
If a student feels ill at school, he or she should ask a teacher for a pass to the clinic. Our clinical aide or school nurse will talk with the student and assess his/her condition. If the student is ill enough to be sent home, a parent/guardian will be contacted to pick up the student. If there is a medical emergency, Wooster has a Code Blue Team which will be activated to handle the situation until emergency help arrives. The clinical aide, school nurse, school police officer, or administrator may call an ambulance in extreme situations. Parents will be contacted if/when a medical emergency or accident happens.
What about lockdowns or other emergencies at school?
Occasionally we have a Lockdown or a Secure Campus that requires us to lock down the school. Events such as an intruder on campus or a serious problem in the neighborhood could cause us to go into lock down status. If a lockdown is required, Washoe County School District School Police and our Area Superintendent are notified, and we will use Connect Ed to communicate with parents.
We have a School Incident Response Team that meets regularly to plan for emergencies, and Wooster staff members are trained each year on how to respond in emergency situations. We understand that many students are likely to communicate with their parents via text message or email using their cell phones in emergency. It is important to remember that students will probably not have complete information during an emergency situation. The most reliable information will come via the Connect Ed calls or from the Washoe County School District Communications Office. Student safety is our first priority, and Wooster’s principal will communicate with parents as soon as possible in the event of an emergency.
How can I find out how my student is doing in their classes?
Parents may log on to Infinite Campus through the Parent Portal in order to check on their student’s grades and assignments. If you do not have your login and password, or if you have forgotten it, please contact our Family Graduation Advocate Silvia Gil at (775)321-3160. If your student starts to struggle in one or more classes, the first thing to do is contact the teacher(s) to get more information about how your student is doing. The teacher will have detailed information and suggestions for how the student could improve. If you have more concerns, or if a student is struggling in several classes, please contact the counselor for your student’s grade level.
What about dances, football games, and other night time events?
An exciting part of high school is attending events outside of the school day. Students must carry their student ID cards at all school events, and all school rules apply. Administrators attend most varsity level athletic events, and our School Police Officer and/or other WCSD School Police Officers attend many of the night-time events as well. As always, student safety is our primary concern. Parents are welcome at extra-curricular events as spectators, chaperons, or volunteers. Please be sure your student has clear plans for transportation and ensure that your student is picked up promptly at the end of an activity.
